DPF exhaust blocked? The Reasons Why a Diesel Car Might Not Add Up

For a little while it seemed as though diesel vehicles were all the rage in the UK. But now it appears some of the lustre has worn off. The problem? The savings consumers used to enjoy – between the combination of better mileage and lower prices at the pump – have all but evaporated since the Chancellor adjusted fuel prices and made diesel more expensive than petrol.

Increased government regulation is also making it more costly to produce diesel engines. So much so that the difference between new petrol and diesel cars could be over £1000. It’s all adding up to more costly ownership and a longer pay-off time before consumers realise any financial benefit from owning diesel.

Complicating the matter is the fact that last year’s new regulations require the installation of a DPF (diesel particulate filter) on all diesel engines. They have been common for about 5 years now. Engines have had an injection upgrade and some other engine adjustments in order to make sure everything works as it should. Next year diesel vehicles in the UK will also have to meet new emissions standards, requiring the installation of a nitrogen oxide trap.

Diesel fuel may be better for overall mileage and raw power, but it’s also dirtier. And using it while meeting European air quality standards is becoming an expensive proposition. It may be that the days of using diesel just for minor driving around town could be numbered.
