Plans have just been announced that are going to see the train that runs from Queen Street in Glasgow to Waverley Station in Edinburgh electrified. This will mean that the journey is going to be 10 minutes shorter than it was before the modification. The upgrade is going to cost over £600 million and it is also going to see the trains upgraded with new services such as on-board wireless Internet.
This is not just good news for those who ride the journey but it is also going to mean that hundreds of people have employment during the construction of the new railway. In addition to this the station in Glasgow, Queen Street is also going to undergo significant renovations ahead of the Commonwealth claims which are occurring in Glasgow in 2014.
The idea behind the transformation is that it is going to turn the station into a transport hub of an international standard, significantly improved upon the state of the station today. A new glass front is going to be added to the entrance of the station as well as a new food court and a link to a close by shopping centre being constructed. It is estimated that the cost of this project is going to be around £1 billion, including the train renovations.
The budget for the project was initially quite a bit larger but in order to save money the Scottish government have reduced the cost of the entire project by around £300 million. This does mean however that the frequency of the number of trains running between these two Scottish cities is not going to immediately come into effect, but it is going to be slightly delayed.
