City parking is never easy, and for some reason the car parks are always miles away from where you actually want to be. The problem is that there are always parking spaces available it’s just a case of knowing that you are more than likely to inflict damage not only on your own vehicle but also those parked in front and behind.

You would think in this day and age and with the technology available that some car manufacturer would put an end to parking nightmares for ever, and thankfully that day is now here. Ford have developed Active Park Assist, an absolute godsend for those desperately seeking a parking space and then actually getting into it with their car still in one piece.  Active Park Assist is one of the innovations that Ford have introduced as part of their Go Further initiative making “accessible the highest levels of innovation, quality, safety and fuel efficiency.”

As with all features of this type, they are best demonstrated through video form rather than words, and there is an brilliant video for the Active Park Assist set in Paris. This is a city notorious for its drivers trying to squeeze into spaces barely big enough for a scooter never mind an SVU, and sensors have been placed on a section of road where there is one parking space in between parked cars.

Cars trying to squeeze into this space have every crunch translated into points on a pinball game on a screen above. Finally one driver comes along who gets record points and is declared the worst driver. This is pointed out to him and he is given the keys to a Ford Focus which arrives on the back of the truck.

He actives the Active Park Assist which alerts him to the parking space. The steering wheel then turns on its own, the car glides effortlessly into the place, and you can tell by the driver’ face he is thinking “I have got to get myself one of these!”.
