No speeding cops prosecuted in North WalesSixty Six North Wales Police vehicles were caught speeding on cameras throughout the 2009-2010 year, although in 59 of the cases there was no action taken since the officers were able to show that they were exempt given they were speeding in the line of duty.

Another case was thrown out because blue lights could clearly be seen, and another because there was an incorrect detail recorded in the database.  The other five cases are still being investigated.

The figures have been released in the face of a Freedom of Information request, which reported that in 2008-2009 127 vehicles from the North Wales Police force were caught on film speeding.  Out of those 119 were exempt, four were tossed out due to visible blue lights, and three due to incorrect details.  Out of the remaining cases, one driver was sent to a speed awareness workshop.

A spokesman for the North Wales Police force stated that het force has a transparent and robust approach to how it deals with police vehicles that are caught on speed cameras over the limit and are very meticulous about applying exemptions in any case.

The spokesman explained that any officer that is caught speeding must submit a report which is looked at closely before a final decision regarding the matter is made and after authorization for the exemption is given by a senior evidence assessor.
