The bus construction company, the Wright Group is expected to be awarded the contract to build 600 new buses for London, in a drive by Boris Johnson to create a bus that is as iconic as Big Ben and red phone boxes for the capital city. The idea behind the bus is that it is a redesign of the double-decker classic which was originally seen in the 1950s. A competition was launched in 2009 by the Mayor of London in order to create a hybrid power bus that was incredibly innovative.
It is just has been formally approved that the buses will be purchased, although the manufacturer of the buses not been officially named just yet. It is widely expected that the Wright Group are going to be chosen, and many people have little doubt that it could be anyone else.
Mr Johnson has recently commented, “These buses are magnificent, and we really think they are a testament to British style and design. Above all else though, they are a symbol of innovation, and engineering, and I’m delighted to be able to bring them to the city. They don’t only bring a great deal of environmental benefits, but they also bring back the rear platform which passengers can jump on and off of very easily. It is also fantastic that by ordering these buses we are creating many jobs in the UK, something that is definitely needed right now.”
This is not just an event that has become subject to a great deal of publicity because of the design of the buses, but also because it is the largest order of hybrid buses that has ever taken place in Europe.
