2From riding on the roads many motorcyclists should be aware of the importance of wearing specialist ear plugs and already be benefiting from the protection they offer. However, when it comes to shopping around for the perfect pair of motorcycling ear plugs we can often be met by an astronomical range that leaves us scratching our heads, undecided about which ones are best. Through this guide we aim to provide you with all the information you need to make your decision easier.

What are the key factors I need to consider when looking for Motorcycling ear plugs?

Firstly you need to consider the NNR (noise reduction rating) or SNR (Single Number Rating) that you need to guarantee your hearing is safe from harm. A safe sound is measured at 85dB (decibels) and a fully revved motorcycle can reach astonishing 120dB, which means you need to reduce the noise level by 35dB – this is your ideal NNR or SNR.

Another to consider is whether you want reusable or disposable; foam or silicon; or custom or moldable ear plugs. More information about these considerations can be found below.

Custom or Moldable ear plugs?

This is usually the first question that you come up against when searching for your ideal pair of motorcycling ear plugs. Custom ear plugs are designed to match your ear profile exactly with manufacturers often requiring you to have an ear impression made by audiologist (this is commonly included in the price). These unique ear impressions are then sent to the manufacturers for them to construct your custom made ear plugs. Although these can be on the expensive side, custom motorcycling ear plugs can offer the best form of protection and comfort.

Alternatively, you can choose moldable ear plugs that are more cost effective, but requires you to mold them instead of a manufacturer.  Although they don’t offer the same level of protection or comfort as custom ear plugs they are still an extremely comfortable ear plug to wear and can offer a variety of noise attenuation levels.

Foam or silicon; Reusable or disposable motorcyclist ear plugs?

Reusable ear plugs tend to be constructed with non-allergenic soft medical grade silicon, whereas disposable ear plugs are often made using foam. If you are after convenience then we would recommend that you buy disposable ear plugs and ensure that you throw them away after a single use. Reusable ear plugs can be worn time and time again, but with this comes the need to look after them. After a single use you will need to wash your ear plugs and leave them to air dry.
