Eco cars are becoming more and more popular as petrol prices continue to soar to new heights. From California to London we take a look at why the cars are growing in such popularity and why they make financial sense in today’s world.

One vehicle, the Honda Clarity FCX, is making a huge impact in California. This fuel cell car is making it big because of California’s hydrogen highway: a series of stations for hydrogen fuelling for eco-friendly cell cars. When it comes to environmentalism, California is certainly doing its part to stay on top of the game.

While the Honda FCX Clarity is considered to be one of the best eco cars  in the United States, there are certain disadvantages associated with it. One is the lack of significant infrastructure. Stations for hydrogen petrol refilling are few and far between, which means that you may really need to keep a close watch on your fuel gauge. Furthermore, the Honda fuel-cell car is quite limited when it comes to availability. At this stage in the game, it appears that the Honda Clarity won’t be available for mass production until 2018.

But are you aware that you don’t need to buy a brand new vehicle to enjoy the benefits of an eco car?

In fact, there’s a hydrogen conversion kit available that you personally can install in order to get better petrol mileage for your current vehicle – even if it’s a lorry or an SUV. By purchasing an alternative kit for fuel conversion (also called a hydrogen generator), you’ll be able to lessen your carbon footprint, while enjoying the monetary benefits of a car with better fuel economy. However, doing this can be problematic as not everyone is a mechanic or has an interest in car maintenance for that matter. A more efficient method could be to invest in a new hybrid car, such as those made by Honda.

What exactly is an eco car?

An eco car is a car that has some environmental benefits. Generally these cars have lower emissions and higher fuel efficiency – so if you use one you can save money and the planet at the same time.

Why do I need to buy an eco car?

Environmentally friendly cars are based on two factors: their fuel efficiency and their carbon emissions. Cars which boast low emissions and high levels of fuel efficiency are therefore considered to be environmentally friendly.

Aside from the obvious environmental benefits of eco cars, it is important that consumers consider the financial benefits as well. You can save a lot of money by choosing to drive an eco car, even if it is a saloon car. How? Well, for a start you will be saving money on cheaper fuel costs – benefitting from improved fuel economy, but an additional benefit is the fact that you often do not have to pay too much in car tax. If you live in London you are likely to be exempt from the congestion charge too, saving you additional money each time you drive around the capital.
