Luxus is a plastics manufacturer located in Louth and has recently made a technological breakthrough that will allow the carbon footprint of the motor industry in Europe to be significantly reduced. The company has recently developed a polypropylene compound which is much lighter than its previous alternatives. It is expected that this will save half a million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year.
It is expected that the new compound will reduce the weight of a typical car by around 25 kg, this is because it reduces the weight of the plastic components in the car by about 15%. Many car manufacturers in Europe are currently facing the possibility of fines if they do not reduce the carbon emissions of their cars and this new compound is an important step towards doing this.
Luxus was founded in 1965 and is now the largest technical plastics manufacturer in the United Kingdom. Peter Atterby is the managing director of the company and he has said, “EU legislation has encouraged us to develop this new compound and it should satisfy the most rigorous demands that we see in the industry. We will shortly begin piloting this new compound with several vehicle manufacturers.”
