New government plans to make cars more environmentally friendly and drivers more environmentally conscious point to the future looking bright for hybrid cars.
Owning a hybrid car can only be a good thing: they look great and they are great for the environment and your wallet, saving you plenty on expensive fuel costs. Despite the great features of a hybrid car there is always room for improvement! Here are some useful tips on how to fully maximise the hybrid potential.
1. Adapt your driving style
Hybrid vehicles are cheap to run and have virtually no emissions at the point of use. However it should be noted that power is still needed to charge the battery and they can take several hours to charge. If you want to reduce your carbon footprint while driving remember that air conditioning and electrical gadgets can increase energy usage. Adapt your driving style so that you are not too heavy on the accelerator, if you’re too heavy on it then the fuel economy of the car will suffer which is not good for any hybrid lover.
2. Drive speed down
Don’t go zooming around in a hybrid, tame the beauties with a tender caring speed that does not waste energy. The faster your drive the more aerodynamic drag your car has to deal with. Keeping the speed down can really increase the mileage. When driving at a constant speed you don’t lose any energy by making the car work harder to go faster or slower. Driving at a constant speed maximises your fuel usage.
3. Government subsidies
As 2011 marks the breakthrough year for electric cars and mass manufacturing , the UK government has launched a £5,000 electric car grant scheme. Not only can you save the environment you can also save money . Over the next18 months, the government plans to set up around 11,000 charging points in streets, car parks and big supermarkets. This is on top of those already installed, further driving the need to reduce climate change through car emissions.
