Increases in petrol and insurance prices have made the cost of motoring soar to new heights. So getting more miles for our money is more important than ever and a way to do that is through the Advanced and Eco Driving courses from the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).

The eco-driving half day session instructs drivers on techniques of how to reduce environmental damage and save fuel. They show you how to also do a simple but complete vehicle check.

They have a list of tips you can use to make your car more efficient even with ignition off. They included empty out the boot, take off roof racks, keep the windows closed and have your tires adequately inflated.

Next they have you go through a six mile route and check miles per gallon and your speed. After, on the same route they coach you on how to use different techniques for fuel efficiently like not using the gas pedal but using momentum, prepare to stop, but look to go and block gear changes.

Then you get to practice with your new skills to see how the results turn out. The end results increase miles per gallon substantially. The Advance Driving qualification puts motoring at a higher level and even can help in lowering car insurance costs.

They also show you how to save while out on the road; including a five phase hazard system, smooth taking of corners, the difference between urban and rural roads and motorways, towns and dual carriageways. Heightened awareness of things that are around was stressed and knowing your car and how to make it respond in a smooth save way.
